WC IL | Tiling really changes the soil structure. It increases the amount of air in the soil as the water goes to the tile, so there is more pore space available to hold water when it rains. Very little tile is trenched in anymore except for mains, the rest is plowed in. There are some fields around me that have been tiled on 15’ centers, not far from me some is still done on 60-80’ centers. Depends on soil type and slope.
Yes, tile lets you get in the field faster because you aren’t relying on evaporation for all of the drying, the tile removes the free water so the soil dries faster.
I have a son who lives at Napoleonville. I can understand why you have questions on tile when your type of farming is completely different than Midwest farming. Sugar cane is certainly a different beast than corn and beans. If you installed tile there it would probably float to the top!
