Ohio | My answer is that no it will not be worth it. The only way it will work is if you get some private equity company to fund you. There are programs out there that may already do what you want. The problem is the people that haven't bought them at this point probably never will because the cost is too high. From the little bit I've researched there are programs that can track field operations and production really well and those that can track financial data really well, but not any that do both simultaneously. Even if there are, I think a lot of farms would be skeptical on using them due to privacy concerns and what is happening with the data.
To answer the original question I probably spend about an hour every month entering all of the financial transactions into an excel spreadsheet that I have built. As long as I take the time to record all of the details during the year I can easily sort and print reports based on vendor, purchase type, crop, or payment source. I also have a second excel file that keeps production records for each field to track application history, yield, etc. In either situation I can run a report in less than 5 minutes. It generally takes me less than an hour to get everything ready for my tax appointment. | |
