NW IL | What is "farming at scale" down there?
There are quite a lot of 1000ac+ organic farms in the midwest. And a good deal of 2-3000ac+ operations. It's entirely doable.
Weed control just takes a difference mindset of management and the labor to do it. Corn/beans country you'll need at least 1 full time guy for every 600-1000ac depending on field size/shape and equipment size. And a good crop rotation to allow different weed control passes at different times of the year.
Even the guys in the non organic midwest guys fighting Palmer amaranth could clean their fields up quite a bit with a few well timed rotary hoe passes. Add in a cereal rye cover crop and they'd have it beat. | |
