northeastern Ohio | There is an intersection with a 2 way stop on my road. Poor visibility each way. I have witnessed 100's of vehicles blow through the stop signs. Some don't even slow down (speed limit 45 mph on both township roads). My brother was T-boned a few years ago. My neighbor was T-boned a few years before that. My uncle was T-boned a few years before that. I have witnessed at least 10 other crashes in the past 30 years. You get the idea.
Is it legal in Ohio for me to set up a camera to record at this intersection? Yes it is, as long as the camera is on my property and pointed at a public area (roadway).
Should I do it? I would probably get hung in the court of public opinion currently!!! But think about it. Knowing that there is a camera will make some people stop at the stop sign. I would give the footage to the township and highway patrol to document the actual number of violations. Changes could be made to make it a safer intersection. It might save my wife's life, my sons, a neighbor, or someone random.
These Flock cameras are there to do the same. While I respect privacy, using this information to save lives or track down criminals seem reasonable to me. Using it for criminal activities or stalking should be banned. | |
