Driftless SW Wisconsin

centralmnangus - 8/15/2026 18:58 I don’t mind calving our heifers… they aren’t any more trouble then the rest of the cows. Actually once bred and headed to pasture they join the mature cows and are expected to be a cow. A little forethought into the heifer’s genetics and phenotype would help some folks. Just because she has the parts doesn’t mean she deserves to be a cow. It also helps when you select bulls on more then just there epd numbers. Been trying to keep extra heifers the last couple years. Gonna keep with that strategy for now.

I agree. My home grown heifers are with the cows and calving ease bull now. Bull gets pulled around Sept 1 after 45 day breeding period. Cows and heifers will be together through calving. I consider them all as cows. Any heifers that don't calve within a 45 day window starting April 26 go to my processor, cows that don't calve in the window go to Bloomington sale barn. I haven't had a heifer or cow that couldn't calve unassisted for years. (knock on wood)

Difference this year is I'm pulling the bull much earlier than usual since I can't use this guy any more - too much of his genetic line. Will have  to buy a new registered bull next spring.
