Martindale Creek is west of town.
The body of water beside the sports field has always been called the Whitewater Canal.
I guess I should have paid more attention in school. The bridge on the east of town crosses it, but I guess it's an old canal that went down to Metamora Indiana, years ago.
That was my next question, I know the Whitewater had the canal system with it but wasn’t sure how much of that still existed. I know part of it still exists at Metamora, you can still take a boat ride pulled by mules there. I was wondering if the old canal system was part of the reason these towns are getting hit as hard as they are. I know when Dayton flooded in 1913 part of the issue was once the river got up high enough it got into the canals and basically had quick way to flood the whole city. |
