Subject: RE: Cattle downsizing

I would be rolling Milo stalks right now for 150/tn. I want in on that. It’s odd here. Big rounds of haygrazer say 1300# won’t bring $70. I have a good size haystack and still growing, but I’m not selling anything for that kinda money. There’s still last years grass for $40 a bale on Facebook and all the 10 acre people griping about hay cost for their tax deductions. While some of us didn’t grow much grass and are trying to stack it up to make it by.

I’m thinking at this point instead of taking .65 to run someone’s gain cows on wheat I just throw mine on wheat and hoard the hay. It’s really not penciling well to graze someone else’s cattle on wheat, especially haying your own. I’m thinking if they don’t want to pay because “feedlot can do it cheaper” they should send them to the feedlot. I’ve got numbers from friends who sent theirs to feedlot and .65 isn’t what it’s costing a pound.

I’m still keeping heifers. But I’m making enough to cash flow off steers and want to keep building. I’m probably going to start converting cash crop ground to grazing next year, probably not permanent grass yet, but wheat and prussic acid free haygrazer type stuff.
