SW OH | Back in about 1999 I went to a USS plant and picked up a coil in Gary. I remember driving what seemed like 15 miles between the interstate and the plant. It was a straight, flat road probably 6 or 8 lanes wide. No traffic, no pedestrians, some burned out and falling down buildings, but mostly vacant lots. Several parked cars that had been burned and 2 still on fire, but nobody around. Maybe 2 convenient stores that had tall steel fence around them and only a walk up window. I think it was around the early afternoon.
When I got to the plant I had to go through a lock system. I pulled in there were gates in front of me and the gates behind me closed. Concertina wire on everything. Then 2 guys searched every nook and cranny of my truck. The sleeper, tool boxes, frame rails, even above the trailer axles. They told me they were looking for people trying to sneak in. I had to go through the same routine to get out. What a nice place******
