If I were you I would not chop that down. Not just because it is an heirloom, it can serve as a good reference marker and a good shady deer stand or blind but I have no idea if the deer thing is applicable in East Central South Dakota but from what I read it is present over there but do not know if it is as numerous as it is out here [we have roughly 1.5 million of them about 30 deer per square mile]. HOWEVER given that I have heard wild hogs are on the rise in South Dakota you may find a use for that anyway soon...
