Western Ontario | I have a buddy that finishes about 3000 head a year and he’s always telling me feeder cattle are too expensive and I’m always telling him that he’s the one setting the price…..
Local feeder sale here Tuesday
61 black steers 957 lbs @ $3.47 US$ ($4.89/lb snow pesos) = $3322/head US$
Ontario rail price this week $3.87/US$ ($5.45 Can )
1000 lb carcass = $3870/head US$
$3870-$3322 =$548.00
Need to put 682 lbs per head on (I’m using 61% dressing percentage, Canadian carcasses don’t include kidney, pelvic and heart fat and usually run 2-3 % lower than the US) for about 80 cents US$ a lb….doesn’t sound like many dollars to work with…..there were about 800 head at the sale and would guess similar economics on most of them…..ie; more than a few feeders willing to do it for 80 cents a pound.
