Cullom, Illinois | With yesterday's closing of the Tyson plant in Joslin, Illinois, a lot of cattle feeders are needing to find new outlets for their cattle. Some don't have a lot of time, as they were scheduled for delivery to Tyson within the next few days. And to add salt to the wound, they may have already rejected a bid from someone else. Anyway, I thought it would be a good idea to start a list of commercial packers that are relatively close to Illinois. I realize there are several privately owned plants throughout the state but the Tyson closing leaves a huge hole for the commercial feeders. I'm sure the auction barns with a fat cattle market will continue to have buyers from other plants. But if you know of a packing plant and maybe have some contact information, let's help each other out here.
I know of two: Aurora packing. They were traditionally a fat dairy breed market but have started to expand in the beef breeds. I have no contact info. And, Iowa Premium, I have gotten bids from them in the past but never sold them any cattle. Sorry, no contact info either.
And to add, maybe Tyson will accept delivery to their other plants for cattle they already have contracted here in Illinois. Its more trucking to Nebraska/Kansas, but maybe they will help out during the transition. Let's hope.
