We have one with the sides split so one side can be soft and the other firm. The middle transition area is noticeable and not in a positive way. I'd suggest not going smaller than a king size if splitting the sides to have more room in your comfort zone. It really felt like a cheap air mattress at first, but we put a layer of memory foam on top of it. That was a big improvement. The memory foam was much more comfortable, and we could still adjust the firmness with the air pressure.
