Bremen, KS | I find the JD PS tractors work well for baling. These days I use a 4450 PS with a 566 baler. I do back up a little ways as often I don't want to kick the bale and have it roll away. the Power Shift makes that easy. I probably use the "clutch" (foot and inch pedal as it's called) too much. While I'm closing the end gate I shift to 7th with the pedal depressed and ease my way back going forward. I find it tedious to shift through all of those speeds from a dead stop. The PS transmission will not automatically work through the speeds--it goes directly to the speed selected. I usually bale in 9th or 10th unless conditions dictate otherwise.
I've also baled with the 8 speed PS and ran it very similarly. Typically I'd bale in 5th or 6th with those. The 15 speed has ratios that roughly split the difference between the selections of the 8 speed which make it nicer for baling or other such PTO work.
Find a tractor that has been cared for, only use JD Hy-Guard in it, and it will run a long time.
The later 50 series and newer are supposed to shift more smoothly due to a "modulating valve".
I can't speak to how a Quad Range would work as we've never had one on the place. | |
