My brother-in-law is a carpenter. He says the rule of thumb is if you can fit a pencil thru the hole, a mouse can fit thru it. Just need to get its head thru and the rest of his body can squeeze thru. His words not mine, but I believe it. So 1/4" hole, I say very possible.
