Wait to long to replace and the carriage bolts that hold the plastic transition piece will be so worn on the inside that will just spin. Then you have to figure out how to cut the bolts off without ruining the transition piece.... this was on the 50s and 60s, I don't remember what the 70s looked like. Pulling them covers out the back is a pain...
