From my perspective what I have worked with in our conditions, I would say 30 foot max. Our S77 was best with the 30 foot dynaflex. I couldn't imagine pushing a wider header with less horsepower.
Our S77 ran 100 percent hp with the 30 foot header and the S78 following it with a 35 foot header at the same speed was 72 percent power with 5 foot wider header. Anyway that is from my perspective.
We push 40' with S77's and get along fine Glenn, your mountains take some power just to drive around LOL
You have some pretty heavy crops up there from what I understand too...not that green stem beans aren't tough.
You are accurate though, an S77 and an S78 are not equals...but an R62 and an R66 are much closer to equals in my opinion than even an S77 and S78. The engine makes a HUGE difference. No different than R62-R72 I feel there's a difference, but once you got to the S Series, I never felt the S77 felt that much more impressive than the S67, R62-65-66 versus R72-75-76 they always had a LOT of extra capacity, but once you put the big rotor in the smaller power S67 seemed to get bigger while the S77 didn't seem as impressive.
Maybe that's because we've had the 7 cylinder in the class 7 for 12 years now and I don't remember it as well too...
Now, once we got the 24 knife chopper, we started putting those in S77's along with 6 sweeps on the CDF and cutting off 3 of the discharge paddles, and it seemed like we got a bigger capacity bump than we did with the same mods on a S67.
