NW Missouri | In my opinion, the best older tractor for baling is a Case powershift. They are as close to a shuttle shift as you can get in older tractors. Going from forward to reverse is all hydraulic, so there is no gear grinding. You do mostly have to come to a stop, but you don't have to completely quit moving like you do to shift a JD or any other mechanical shift tractor into reverse. With a Case you push in the clutch, put the lever into reverse as you bring the tractor mostly to a stop, let out on the clutch and it starts going the other direction. It works great. There are also 3 forward speeds to pick from in each gear without clutching as you are baling.
Someone will be along shortly to say how terrible Case powershifts are, but that has definitely not been the experience on our farm. We have a 3594 on the hydroswing, a 1370 on the rake, and a 2294 on the baler. The 3594 and 1370 also have loaders and we haul hay in with them. Stacking bales works great with these tractors for the same reason - ease of switching direction.
Newer shuttle shift tractors are nicer for sure, but as far as older tractors, you can't beat a Case powershift. | |
