I haven't baled with an 8 speed but have ran a 4050 Powershift on a round baler. Technically you don't need to use the clutch at all you can go from Neutral right to whatever gear you want forward or reverse. I use the clutch, as it's smoother and feels like its easier on things. A left hand reverser is handier for quick direction changes but nothing wrong with the powershifts IMO.
