E ND | It's true in all family businesses but farming seems to be the worst for this, it's a romantic/emotional connection to the land that makes people put up with and endure situations that are not great for them.
Farmers undervalue their skills more than anyone. If you backed it up, and went out into the business world (college or no college) and worked your way up through a company or companies from say 23 years old to 63 years old, you'd be in management somewhere making a nice wage with benefits and retirement money put away and looking at how you were going to spend your golden years. So many farmers are in their 60's before Dad even thinks about letting go and with health being a coin flip going forward you're not left with a lot of time to enjoy what should be some easier years.
So many reasons behind it, both real learned experiences the older generations went through (and possibly when they "took the reins" since many of them took over leaving the cemetery) and ideas on how it should be but pretty sad deal for many people on this forum (including members of my own family) that just never work out the way they thought they would. | |
