There is a movie, but it ended up so depressing and cold I don’t think anyone can sit through it. So, basically also close to reality.
Now there are many good things computers and stronger computing power can do for us. That’s really all any of this is - bigger better faster computers. Able to do more.
The data centers collect and store and index information.
Helping with business, solutions to problems, anything a dictionary, encyclopedia, old fashioned Google or lycos used to do. It’s helpful. It can add to our lives.
Replacing a lot of middle management folk with the organization and data sets and quick sorting the modern computers can do is good for business - more info more quickly sorted into better results. Not so sure it’s good for the workforce; but that’s always been the evolution of business into more efficient less cost avenues.
But there is the dark side. Most of what the open AI centers do is just outright plagiarism. Gather all the data and info they can as fast as they can. Index and store it and quickly distill it into a ‘probably right because we averaged the data’ results.
At some point in some fashion they can latch on to your security camera, your modern vehicle driving info, the public cameras being set up all over, your search records, your buying habits through web sites, credit card records, gps coordinates from your phone and vehicle, public records at the court house, your recorded words you say around your phone, computer, tv, Alexis etc, Roku, Firestick, etc.
Is any of this private? Eh. Seems much of that info leaks out. It’s no longer your data, it’s the company that records it who owns the data.
They are happy to sell it for a few bits per 10000 packets of info.
Is anyone watching, regulating all this data flow?
Eh.
All your info you share with your seed company, fertilizer applicator, weed and pest applicator, JD, CNH, Agco, Precision, Ag Leader, Trimble, etc. Data centers can acquire that info and value your farm to the global real estate investor.
And so on.
We have had scammers for many thousands of years. It appears to be human nature.
For a brief period a half century ago, this western world had regulated and enforced and cleaned up much of the worst of the shady, scam type activities. We had a bit of a golden era.
That seems to be all gone now. My inbox gets 50 bogus emails a day. The phone rings with 2-3 bad operators a day. Amozon happily sells you fake tool batteries. And on and on.
The cheapness of massive amounts of data; the ability to sort it quickly and in many different ways; and the creativity of more powerful computers to manufacture fake videos and voices; will put an avalanche of scammer activity targeting people so well it will be difficult to trust any one or anything. When we lose trust in each other…. Well we can see that happening already, and we are only on the first slope, the cliff is only a few data centers away.
Then we get to the media, and politics, and creating false stories. I won’t even bother going down that path, or the influence it will have. This is the core of the book I mentioned, “1984.”
Computers are a good tool for good people.
The invisibility, un regulation, and voyeurism of these computers and the speed that they will process questionable data into questionable results by bad people is - scary.
It can crash our society.
We should be on top of this. And we are not.
