With our kids it seemed like we got them started right early, so they understood that no meant no and let them go on their own, we were busy so no time to be helicopter parents anyway. If started right after a certain point they did not need a lot of supervision or oversight. I always figured as long as there was not real danger of losing life or limb no real harm done, they need to learn there are consequences to their actions. Too many times kids are prevented from making mistakes all their life then handed the keys when they are 16 and they have no sense of consequence's or poor outcomes so they go out and something happens, only then it is serious enough that it can 't be overcome or fixed.
