We went through west Fargo to Casselton in late January for a wrestling tournamanet and they were moving dirt at 9:00pm in sub zero temps during a blizzard on a Saturday night. Boy what a miserable time keeping machines running and dirt from freezing on everything. One of the few times of year when it wouldn’t have water in the bottom of it though. Winnipeg moved 100 million yards of dirt to dig their diversion back in The 60’s. Tough old boys running equipment back then, that’s a lot of dirt to move with no enclosed cabs! The Fargo diversion is supposed to amount to about 60 million yards, so 40% less than winnipegs. There has been a lot ot dirt moved to tame the red as it goes north. There’s has also been a lot of holding cells diked up and down the valley to control water inflow to the red during wet periods and high water. One of the most amazing things to see from nature is when the red is running 6 miles wide. Mind boggling how much water is moving and how wide and flat the valley is.
After the 1997 flood, it was decided to expand the Red River Floodway around Winnipeg. Another approximately 27.5 million yards of dirt was moved during this phase in the early 2000's.
