East central Indiana | Interesting topic of a car breakdown on another forum and the responses got me thinking about parenting (grand parenting) styles. When did you decide how to parent or mentor the younger generations? In the past week on agtalk it has been the 80 year old guy still in charge of his kids and his grandkids all the way to stay out of it all and let teenagers figure it out on their own.
I was probably fortunate that my parents were “firm, but fair” and were encouraging as long as decisions were well thought out. If things weren’t thought out, it was brought to attention that they needed thought out. It might have truly prepared for life, but perhaps allowed for “opportunities” to pass by. Other than being told I was going to secondary education (which was very beneficial from studies to making lifelong friends) I wasn’t told what to do at adulthood.
My kids are younger and I probably tend to be the no nonsense parent that expects accountability and responsibility maybe before it is fair to expect. The passing of my mother in my school years made life real in a hurry. My father juggled it all the best he could and wanted to be sure his kids could be completely self sufficient in their 20’s..
I look around at social (4H as an example) and school events and see helicopter parents that might be reliving their childhoods through their kids and kids that might as well be taking care of themselves. There is obviously an extreme right and wrong, but so much in between.
The old saying is you turn into your parents. Do most people follow the pattern they are raised in or do they make new plans? What percentage of adults truly think their parents messed them up? I will admit my thoughts on how to parent changed drastically after my wife and I had kids and still changes today depending on the situations… | |
