Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS | Last Saturday I was at my mom’s. We were getting ready to go to a family reunion when her land line phone rang. Mom (age 97) answered. Mom didn’t have her hearing aids in yet and was having trouble understanding the caller. I offered to take over the call. The person on the other end (sounded female) was claiming to be a police officer and was calling to inform us that my niece (mom’s granddaughter who lives in Memphis) had caused a car wreck in which the other driver (pregnant woman) had been injured. Niece was hurt but not seriously. They were arresting her and a defense lawyer had been assigned to the case. I asked if her husband had been contacted. Was told no. Niece was very insistent that he not be contacted. That was the first red flag but I went along. Put my niece on the phone. She was blubbering and crying to the point of being unable to talk. Lawyer would call me to discuss bail. I’m getting more suspicious. Sure enough, lawyer called. Said bail was $15,000 but 10% cash would do. Asked if I could provide that. Told him not right this second. Let me call you back. Told mom something’s not right. Niece would not refuse to have husband contacted. Called husband. Both he and niece were home. Hadn’t been anywhere that morning. Turned phone number over to sheriff. Not a working number.
