I've tried what you suggested and seem to be making progress. After a lot of smacking and prying, the rear shoe has good movement but nothing yet on the front shoe. Maybe I need to tighten up that rear bolt now to force the front shoe forward. Will keep on trying.

I hope that this solves the problem. The wheel comes to such a hard stop after the treads move a half inch that I'm starting to think it could be the wheel bearing that's froze up?
