The 252 is a traditional style transformer machine, with all manual adjustment.
The 255 is an inverter type with electronic adjustments. It is also pulse mig capable which is pretty handy for some things, maybe not real useful for farm welding.
Between the 2 the 252 is simpler and will produce an acceptable result on the farm. We have both at the shop I work at and we have had more issues with the 255's. They do make a nicer weld for production welding though. If it is my money and they're both in similar condition, I'd probably go with the 252 for simplicity sake.
