Looking at it in parts the barbs should be the same size on both ends, also it is an orifice not a check valve so the direction should not matter, the reason it is in the system is the fuel transfer pump is electric and always is running with key on and the orifice gives a path for fuel flow if the engine is not running or if the transfer pump flow is more than fuel needed when engine is running.
