Faunsdale, AL | Just to confirm, the voltage feedback wire should be full time hot and connects through a harness along with the large output wire to the same stud on the start relay as the large wire from the starter solenoid battery cable connection stud.
Look for a small red wire there on that starter relay along with two larger heavy wires. If you take that small wire loose, does your full time hot go away. NOTE, you must reconnect both large red wires on the start relay stud after removing the small voltage reference wire.
I wonder if
1 your ignition switch is bad and is sending voltage on #3 terminal all the time
And
2 someone has swapped the connections to a replacement regulator plug/harness at some point. I’ve seen this happen many times and kill the battery when tractor sits over night or longer.
Summary, voltage reference wire is full time hot and is not shown running through the bulkhead connector. It runs in a separate wiring harness with the output wire running to the start relay mounted up on firewall on left side of tractor. It can be cut short at alternator end and cinnected to output stud of alternator without causing any problem.
Excite wire is a solid grey color conductor resistance wire on all of the ones I’ve seen and runs to ignition switch through bulkhead connector. It’s possible later tractors went to a regular stranded wire with a resister in-line somewhere. I have never had problems with my 1980 model and had to dig into that wiring harness far enough to find if it has a solid resistance wire or not. The one that sticks in my mind was a 4230 where it broke at the bulkhead connector end. That was a single gray conductor and I was able to pull enough to crimp splice it back together.
