Be careful in Cairo.

I went to see the confluence and the remnants of Fort Defiance in 93 or 4. It was questionable then.

My understanding was during the 60s the black residents boycotted the white businesses. Neither would budge. Combine that with the decline of river commerce and it was the death knell.

Some neat architecture, but I wouldn’t drive around town.

The Crenshaw House in Southern Illinois was a place where escaped slaves were illegally held before being returned for bounty to the South. Beautiful view of the Ohio River.

I second Shawnee Park.

I visited Bald Knob Cross a few times. Highest point in Southern Illinois, or one of them. Shawnee has a high point too.

Pomona, IL was a German POW camp. Not much to see, but in the area of Bald Knob and Shawnee and easy to catch all in a day.

Chester, IL is the birthplace of Popeye.

There’s wineries in the area too.

Heat of the Night, the movie, was filmed in Sparta, IL.
