If you don't have rocks, then water jetting a pipe can work, or use a pressure washer to cut a trench if you have clayey soil. A 1/2 or 3/4 copper pipe can be bent and jet around a curve if that helps avoid digging a starting trench, hook a garden hose and push it through, if you hit a rock start over. I suppose you could bend steel pipe also, just a little harder to get it smooth and even. A pressure washer cut trench works great at 18-24", 3' is a little tougher and 4' takes a while, use a 2x6 to push down as you go to make sure the trench bottom will reach an even depth.

For ground heat pipes, you could water jet those also. 2"-4" pipe down at an angle as deep as you can go, can't have too many.
