Central Western VA Mountains | My Dad use to mow the lawn on the farm, house yard, barn yard and the lanes leading around and he always did it early morning when dew was on everything. Mowed once a week, small JD 160 riding mower with the plastic deflector tossed from day one. Seemed like he always got a good cut, that 160 would really throw/scatter the clippings. He ran that mower for probably 15 years, zero issues, including a rusted out deck and sold it for almost what he paid new. Was the first mower we had with a Kawasaki engine and we were skeptical of it at first, having ran Briggs, Kohler and Tecumseh - but the Kawasaki was perfect too. I’m 99% sure he mowed early to beat the heat and otherwise get on with the day.
I have always mowed grass after it dries off, however, fast forward to my older age and I’m feeling the heat probably like he did. Soooo - I’m thinking about taking a page out of my Dad’s book and mow the same ground with the dew, early morning to beat the heat. BTW, my Dad had a JD 160 and I’ve got a JD X750 Yanmar diesel with 60” deck and the plastic deflector, like my Dad’s mower, has been gone since day one and it really throws/scatters the clippings too!
Question - anyone typically cut their grass early morning with the dew, like my Dad, to beat the heat and get on with the day? Any rusted out decks or failed spindles die to the moisture?
