How long are you planning on going? It would be easy to spend 2-3 days in D.C. and Gettysburg. The Boston area has lots of history to tour with Plymouth and Cape Cod. The Acadia National Park is supposed to be to be really nice. Lots to see and a fair amount of driving.

I would suggest from D.C. head North to Gettysburg and then West Point for a tour. Then on to Boston and up to Maine.
