I've heard of Chincoteague. Personally, I've never been there. It seems like it would fit into what you are looking for. Visitor Center. Assateague Island. Again, I don't know much about it. Links to museums in Virginia area. There would be lots of Museums related to Revoluntionary War in the DC area. Also, lots of history in the area related to the American Civil War.
