Would a torque measurement device work?
My brother had the same issue you did, and wound up getting a little gizmo that has square drive adapters, and just puts his breaker bar into it, and the socket on the other end, and it has a display that shows the torque applied. It was quite a bit cheaper than a torque wrench, and seems accurate. It is a bit bulky, but if there is room for it, might be worth considering.
