Pittsburg, Kansas | My brand new car is definitely under water. And I'm guessing it will be for about four or five years.
We walked out the door with zero down. No money at closing. They told us it would be probably three months before the bank got the paperwork completed and first payment was due. We are paying zero percent interest on a six year loan with monthly payments. 72 payments times the amount of the payment equals the total we paid for out the door price of the car. Pretty simple math with no interest.
No way the car can't be under water for at least several years. Either that or a Subaru has magical residual resale value.
If they would have offered a comparable cash discount, I would have taken it and paid cash. But there was no either/or deal. Zero interest was all they offered (plus a 1500 discount no matter what). Either 3, 4, 5, or 6 years. I'm not too proud to use someone else money for six years. I'm getting 4.5-4.9 on money market accounts and CD's. So there is my cash discount.
