SE IL and SW IN
I also would agree with Paulson, but with a combination of species now available, most of his goals can be met. ARS has had a vetch breeding program for as long as I am aware of, with an occasional new introduction, but I still buy and plant hairy vetch from the gene pool as my first venture into the world of vetch some 40 years ago.
A short review of the history of cover crop breeding and the changes that producers have made over the last few decades might be interesting to some of your attendees. It might put into perspective the hurdles presented in this work. as well as the potential of success with this new effort, which is the most aggressive attempt to make real headway in my lifetime.
