s.e. Pa | That was my post down below, and we have a handful of grass meadows that have been grass forever and need to stay grass. Some we have taken on had more weeds than grass. I find that they are pretty hard to manage, but here’s what helps. Soil test, I’m sure ph is low, and potash is low. We spray in the spring with prowl h20 to help prevent foxtail in later summer. Some people are doing a spring app and another app right after first cutting and getting better results, but you need a premium for the hay to justify that. We also spray some 2-4-d and dicamba at the same time. This time of year we will typically spray crossbow but going to try some cimmaron to help clean up milk weed and horse nettle. It helps more for next year. Getting the fertility right (or at least better), spraying twice a year, and cutting 3x helps get them in shape. First cutting is usually nice hay, the later cuttings get harder to keep the tough summer weeds and foxtail out of, but you can get it good enough. That’s probably the best plan for ground that needs to stay hay and is short term. Don’t pay too much rent! It’s a lot of work. | |
