Yes they work, use one regularly, noticeable difference where it’s ran. Trick is to run it just under the compaction, which require someone using a probe to find the compaction depth which I think rarely happens. Most just set it down and hope it works. Works better if intentionality is used with it also


I agree they need set just under the compaction layer but issue is the that layer is not consistent or at least here it isn't. To op my observation is they do help let the water down through and it is noticeable. However it seems after a couple bring rains infiltration starts to taper off. They really don't shatter the compaction as much as they will will break compaction into blocks. Over time with rain they settle back down and get sealed back off as blocks are still a hunk of solid. I will try to post a pic of the blocks from headlands where we had manure traffic. Theses stopped the tractor dead throwing me into the steering wheel and then let loose with tractor taking of. When they let loose they flew in the air. This not from lifting ripper out of ground but popping out.




Not sure covercrop roots will fix areas that 5 shanks will almost stop a 310hp FWA with a full rack and pull the front tires off the ground??? That's tight soil profile... I have had this same issue with Inline NoTill Rippers where they would grab a chunk and either slide it and leave a pot hole and mound... Or have had the soil plug in between and have to pull it loose with a log chain ect... Not really notill anymore... AS you have to go back and repair these spots... We went to a JD 2100, 5 Shank, Spring Reset, with Two Setbacks, on Two shanks and this problem stoped... Not all borders need the outside rows done as some have said it can be a low traffic area... Traffic area can be further inside depending on equipment size... Same size planter/sprayer/speader/header ect all run pretty much in their same path every season especially with the use of RTK and Border pass Guidance? Is it a problem? Guess that depends on soil type and conditions for each operation... I like to do certain harvest traffic areas and all borders along trees to nip roots, Even where we have 20' of grass there are still roots from trees using moisture and nutrients out side grass strip... So we run deep as possible to catch all the roots we can more than worrying about running just below compaction layer... When fixing center of field then... That's where I'd probe and set just below compacton layer unless it gets too shallow and ripper boils surface too much then lower and slower... Takes a lot of time and work to keep borders in check, Mowing/Triming limbs back/ and spraying the under brush keeping grass healthy... That pays here I believe... Not everywhere ripping is needed as all soils are different... We have some that will bounce right back from a fall loadout spot without ripping and others that it's a must, mainly depending on amount of clay content in soil here... So it's a trial and error... Ripper will tell you... Have pulled into loadouts and ripper hardly boiled soil and we will just stop and leave it be... Others you will know your doing good... Also like as mentioned Fall is best if conditions are right for winter freeze out... But will do Early spring if Fall is too wet to do a proper job...
