NWIL | I've got an inline ripper I bought to use on all the spots where there was a lot of truck and cart traffic in the fall. Yes, hard pulling and I think I was shattering the ground and helping get rid of the farming induced compaction. Two years in a row after I'd been doing just that for several years weather set in before I could get around to ripping up all those areas, only a few got done. Come the next spring the ground wasn't any different between the spots I'd ripped and those that didn't get done, planter dropped right in, crop grew up the same between the two different practices, and dare I say some of the areas where I ripped were wetter and more "boggy" after the spring rains compared to where nothing had happened. Yield maps showed the same slight drop off either way, no 80 bushel swings or anything. I still have the ripper sitting here if I feel like doing it again, but so far the urge hasn't been there.
Now this is for me, where I am, where I practice notill everywhere except my COC acres. Your mileage may vary. | |
