I do remember when they barn threshed, that was when there was a custom operator that came with threshing machine in fall and they pitched the sheaves back out of part of barn to thresh while blowing the straw back into the mow.
The grain had been cut and tied in sheaves, stooked, hauled to barn when nice and dry and stored until thresher came 
Then neighbours swapped labour to help one another thresh each others grain.
That was a very dirty and labour intensive way to harvest.

The attached picture is the threshing gang around 1950 after my father and his 2 brothers had purchased their own threshing machine.
Picture includes both my grandfathers, father, 2 uncles and 1 hired hand as well as me and my siblings
