NW Illinois | Well kinda. Enlist is a 3.9# per gallon Choline, which is a form of an amine base. So at 32 oz per acre use rate your getting .975 worth of acid an acre. When using 16 oz of an LV6 product, which normally are actually around 5.6# per gallon of acid not actually true 6 pounds, you are getting about .7 pounds of acid per acre. Benefit of using the ester formulation vs the amine formulation is esters are made by breaking the 24D acid down in alcohols. So in a gallon of LV6 you get the added bonus of petroleum distillates to affect the plants being sprayed. Example mixed a little diesel fuel in with 4# amine and report back on it's killing power.
Now why are we using the Choline( form of Amine salt) version. Because university and other's studies show a 90% reduction in volatility from using the amine formulation vs the ester formulation at the same 24D acid amount per acre. Enlist being a choline is supposed to reduce volatility another 90% vs it's other amine versions. So tradeoff is roughly a 98% reduction of volatility in Enlist vs an ester formulation at the same 24D use rate but losing the alcohols abilities affects on plant tissues.
Now we have to talk formulation changes. Example from the dicamba side is you have 3 different amine versions commonly run. DMA salt(Banvel), DGA salt(Clarity,Diflexx,Xtendimax), BAPMA salt(Engenia). While these all work similarly at the same acid rate per acre, there is still potentially slight differences in killing power of each salt. Status,Yukon are dry formulations(K Salts). There are no commonly used ester formualations used in the USA of dicamba salt. 24D has ester formulations, amine formulations and Choline formulations. Next you have to take into account each product, especially ester versions of 24D, having additives that are surfactants depending on manufacturers choices.
Not easy to judge one against the other. Enlist is required by law over the top of soybeans. Weaker than other versions of 24D, definitely, but your not judging apples to apples when considering what the other 24D acids are floating with in that gallon of liquid. Closest comparison would be to compare Enlist vs the cheapest 4# amine sold in the market, at the same acid rate per acre.
