 Pittsburg, Kansas | I'll let Ed chime in to answer your questions mostly because I'm a complete Newby to electric vehicles. He knows more in his little finger about the subject and more specifically about Teslas than I do in my entire head.
But I will share my opinion, worthless as it is. I think things that require lots of energy are going to be a tough nut to crack for EV's of any nature. Be it pickup trucks or semi's or freight trains of whatever. For a pickup to go back and forth to a field with a grease gun in the back, not much of a problem. Start pulling goosenecks with seed tenders or twenty head of cattle 50 miles to a sale barn and things get lots more problematic due to the energy density in gasoline or Diesel compared to any commercially available battery pack. A pound of Diesel or Gasoline will get a LOT more work done than a pound of battery pack. As you get ever bigger battery packs for more energy to do more work, the vehicle also gets lots heavier making the battery need to be bigger yet to pull itself. So in my uneducated opinion, electric via battery storage makes more sense on smaller lighter vehicles, not big transport haulers.
Maybe it can be done some day. Lots of technology has came about in my lifetime that I never imagined could be done so like my Dad was fond of saying to me when I was 5 years old, was mad and proclaimed I was "never "going to do this or that, "never say never" or "never is a long time". So maybe some day it will become more feasible. But for guys wanting to do semi-truck work with a pickup truck, good luck. It's not there yet and maybe never will.
