Yes they work, use one regularly, noticeable difference where it’s ran. Trick is to run it just under the compaction, which require someone using a probe to find the compaction depth which I think rarely happens. Most just set it down and hope it works. Works better if intentionality is used with it also
I agree they need set just under the compaction layer but issue is the that layer is not consistent or at least here it isn't. To op my observation is they do help let the water down through and it is noticeable. However it seems after a couple bring rains infiltration starts to taper off. They really don't shatter the compaction as much as they will will break compaction into blocks. Over time with rain they settle back down and get sealed back off as blocks are still a hunk of solid. I will try to post a pic of the blocks from headlands where we had manure traffic. Theses stopped the tractor dead throwing me into the steering wheel and then let loose with tractor taking of. When they let loose they flew in the air. This not from lifting ripper out of ground but popping out.
