Central Virginia | The 50 cow commercial dairy is not big enough to support 2 generations. When the first generation is still working there isn't enough left to pay second generation. 50 cows is also a "do everything yourself" size. It's not attractive to never have a day off or never be able to leave the farm unless you are single or at a minimum have no kids, then you're back to not having another generation to continue the farm.
There's lot's of reasons small farms sell out and blaming big farms (is a big farm just more cows than you have?) is intellectually dishonest.
For context I'm 5th generation and we milk around 300. | |
