You also didn't buy land during the 1980-1985 timeframe, and your dad likely didn't buy a piece that caused him to either go broke or hamstrung him for 20 years. However there were lots of guys regretting land purchases back then. Many of them don't frequent agriculture chat rooms because they exited farming ~40 years.
"Normalcy bias"
Just because most of the current land buyers haven't seen or personally experienced land values get cut in half doesn't mean it can't or won't happen again.
That doesn't mean that one can't/shouldn't buy land but I'd be very cautious about buying land with lots of leverage if you need appreciation to keep the investment afloat. If you have cash and want to own land, there's really never a bad time to buy.
Land that is adjacent to what you already own/farm is worth more than a piece that requires more travel to get to simply from a logistics/efficiency standpoint but that doesn't mean one should go "full retard" on owning it. Land is going to significantly drop in price again sometime in the future. The only questions are "what will be the cause?", "when?" and "from what price level?". Having lots of leverage at the wrong time will once again be catastrophic for some, for others it will be another buying opportunity.
