The mechanical part may be simpler, but the electronics under the hood of an EV don't exactly look simple. Time will tell the reliability issue.

I was kind of glad my Pathfinder still had the seven speed automatic instead of some of the newer greater gear numbers transmissions.

The argument you made reminded me of how Diesels in pickups changed twenty years ago. Seems like over time a lot of the advantages of Diesel in a pickup went mostly out the window for a grease gun hauler application as the Diesels got worse because of the emissions standards while the gassers with fuel injection just kept getting better.

Now like you say, the getting better part is turning into huge complication in design, oil requirements, etc. Seems like everything almost is getting worse because of ever increasing emissions standards. Well maybe we get a little relief from that for at least 4 years. Then who knows?
