Hello folks,

the keynote speaker (Dr. Lisa Kissing-Kucek) for our field day next Friday (8/7) is slated to talk about cover crop genetics and management with an emphasis on maximizing the value of legumes CCs.

Lisa is a cover crop breeder so genetic improvement is a top priority but we all know that MANAGEMENT & environmental conditions strongly impact how genetics are expressed.

It would be great to have you come ask Lisa Qs during the field day BUT many of you are located FAR from W. IL or have other obligations next Friday... so let me know what you would like to ask a cover crop breeder and I will share your Qs/comments with Lisa.

Joel - I’d be really curious to watch any videos from her talk/q&a also on either YouTube or something.

Few questions:
Clover species (red, white, sweet) enable their symbiotic n producers to fix nitrogen/hence the residual N credit to a following crop. Is the difference among species in N available after termination simply due to (1.) symbiotic bacterial strain in the nodules or (2.)amount of root exudates or sugars the species of clover supplies the bacteria to fuel the n fixation factory. Is there any way plant breeders and microbiologists are screening for this/n production efficiency or brute N output

Alfalfa - is there a quantity difference of N fixation between alfalfa root types (taproot vs. branching) that are advertised for hay vs grazing?
