Southeast WI | In the midwest these are "natural" breaks in 2 main soil types and they are broadbrush descriptions that mainly describe roughly how they were derived. Glaciers laid down the platform for soils along with soil blown in from the west.
I agree with what you said except: "And soil O.M. levels have more to do with management than they have to do with geological base." We aren't going to change soil OM with standard or even fairly intensive ag management. Long term work at the UW has shown the only practice that can come close to sustaining soil carbon and soil OM is managed pasture systems. Anything else we are going to do will degrade soil.
