Buhl, ID | Many years ago I took a night shift factory job in a area that had hundreds of small 50 cow dairy farms. There were a lot of guys that had recently sold the cows and started working in the factory because the grass was greener that way. Several had told me "if I spent less time at the bar and more time in the barn i wouldn't have to be running this machine all night."
Another guy about late 40s worked next to me I got to know well. He had about 60 cows on a rented farm. He said he didn't want to sell but the wife pressured him into it. Every time they went somewhere they had to leave early to go home and milk cows. His teenage kids all wanted to live town life instead of working on the farm. So he got a job at the factory and his wife started bartending. After a while his kids were getting in trouble and the wife wasnt coming home much anymore. He said "I should have kept the cows and got rid of her."
Edit to add the factory shut down a year or two later and moved to China.
