| My Son is a journeyman electrician with a non union company. The union has been chasing him for better than 2 years as there is a data center being built in the city he works and they need help BAD. The money they throw at him is crazy but you also will be working 12 hour days 7 days a week if you let them make you. If you don't work a lot of the overtime, then they will ship you off to another job. He does not want to work that much which I understand.
Union apprenticeship is different that non union and the union doesn't "like" to accept it and require non union guys to take their classes and tests to meet their standards. This is what my Son encountered, but as they got more aggressive, they dropped some of the requirements for this and the last time, they would get journeyman pay from hire and may have to take some tests. They are so desperate for help, I doubt he would ever have to prove anything.
The lucky union electricians get hired by a company and never leave that employer. They just always work for that company but if work gets slow or the employee isn't doing a good job, they will get shipped to the union hall and get sent to whatever company need a sparky that day which leads to traveling distances possibly and being bounced around.
Union people love the union and non union hate the union. Been that way since the dawn of time.
